Rotation Schedule

An example of the current three-year internal medicine academic curriculum is listed below. The hospital and residency program have partnered with Trinity Health IHA Medical Group for resident education, rounding and ambulatory experience. Trinity Health IHA Medical Group is based in Ann Arbor and employs more than 3,000 staff, including nearly 1,000 providers consisting of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, care managers and midwives in more than 150 practice locations across Southeast Michigan.

MTS

The medical teaching service is our core general medicine inpatient service. Each MTS team includes one core faculty attending, one senior resident, 2 interns, and 1-2 medical students. All key subspecialties use MTS as a hospitalist service. This service provides a rich and diverse experience when rotating on medicine. There is no overnight call on the MTS rotation except once a block for seniors. Interns do not take overnight calls on MTS. Schedules strictly adhere to ACGME requirements to optimize learning.

Consult Service

This is a 4-week rotation, A PGY3 resident works with an Academic Hospitalist faculty providing consultation services to Surgical, Rehab, Trauma and other specialties. They are also exposed to Rapid Response teams and work closely with them to provide critical services to patients.

MICU

The medical intensive care team is comprised of an intensivist, three senior residents, five interns, and 1-2 medical students. Rounding occurs in a multidisciplinary approach, including respiratory therapists, pharmacists and nutritionists. Procedures are abundant without competing fellows.

Cardiology

Residents spend a total of four at least four weeks on this rotation. They work with a board-certified cardiologist. Our catheterization lab has high-volume activity, rivaling most surrounding hospitals. They provide consult services to patients with multitude of cardiac problems, and develop management plans under the direct supervision of attending cardiologists. Attending procedures in the Cath lab, reading Echo is available as well.

Gastroenterology

Residents spend at least a total of four weeks in this rotation. They work with Faculty who are part of the fellowship program at our sister hospital. They take care of patients with complex problems and also get to experience procedures as desired.

Hematology Oncology- Residents work both in the inpatient and outpatient setting for a minimum of four weeks with our faculty who are part of the fellowship program at our sister hospital. This helps them build relationships as well as audition themself for the fellowship to the faculty.

Research Rotation

Residents have the option of doing a research elective for up to 2 weeks. Our program offers a robust research structure with support for Case Reports, presenting at conferences, guidance for research projects, Access to NIS database, IRB process. All our residents also work on Quality Improvement projects with faculty and our chief residents. All our Core faculty are involved with QI projects and research is different forms. Statistical support is provided to the residents as well.

Night Float

Senior residents work with 1-2 interns to triage and staff new admissions. The night float residents/interns work independently in the hospital with attending supervision available.

Ambulatory Clinic (Northwest Academic Internal Medicine Clinic)

We offer a 4+1 schedule for the continuity clinic. This gives the residents an opportunity to plan the whole year and also provides continuity in our clinic. All residents get to work at a Clinic for the underserved population, providing community service. The Clinic and the program work to provide other opportunities for community Outreach within the community with seniors and health fairs. Residents work with dedicated attendings in a ratio of 4:1 for residents: faculty.

Sub-specialists show a particularly keen interest and enthusiasm in teaching. Indeed, they seek out our hospital not only for our diverse patient population, but also for the opportunity to teach medical students and residents. Electives include the following (they do not include call):

Vacation is 4 weeks. 
The compensation package is competitive, with an Educational stipend available for qualifying expenses.
