PGY2 Critical Care Residency

Overview

Trinity Health Oakland (THO) is a 497-bed community teaching hospital located in Pontiac, MI. In 2018, THO was certified by the Joint Commission as the country's first Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center and is home to the Michigan Stroke Network. THO is a Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital for cardiovascular surgery outcomes, as well as a Level II Trauma center.

THO is offering a one-year PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency program. With our highly qualified preceptors and unique patient population in a community-based teaching hospital, THO is a premier setting for PGY2 residents to gain real-life training and experience.

PGY2 Purpose

PGY2 residency programs build upon Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and PGY1 pharmacy residency training to develop pharmacist practitioners with knowledge, skills, and abilities as defined in the educational competency areas, goals, and objectives for advanced practice areas. Residents who successfully complete PGY2 residency programs are prepared for advanced patient care or other specialized positions, and board certification in the advanced practice area, if available.

The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency provides an experience which leads to the development of expert knowledge and skills in critical care pharmacy practice. The PGY2 residency will prepare the resident for job opportunities in the following areas:

Critical Care Pharmacist in hospital setting
Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Critical Care
College of Pharmacy Faculty

Current Resident

	Dr. Nhan Hoang earned his Doctor of Pharmacy from the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy and completed his PGY1 pharmacy residency at Trinity Health Oakland. His professional interests include medical critical care and surgical critical care. He chose to continue his training at Trinity Health Oakland because of the dedicated mentorship and the confident, compassionate, and clinically sharp pharmacists who have shaped his growth. Through his PGY2 training, he looks forward to deepening his clinical expertise and becoming a thoughtful, independent critical care pharmacist. Training at a Catholic institution rooted in service, compassion, and integrity also brings a deeper sense of purpose to his work. Outside of pharmacy, he enjoys watching cooking shows and pretending he is a judge, exploring new museums, and seeking out Italian restaurants with amazing gnocchi.

Required (7 months total)

Medical Critical Care – 2 mo.
Surgical Critical Care – 2 mo
Emergency Medicine – 2 mo.
Cardiovascular Critical Care – 1 mo.

Application Process

THO PGY2 residency candidates will:

Be a graduate from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy in the US
Successfully complete an ASHP-accredited PGY1 Residency
Be eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan
Register for the ASHP Matching Service with an NMS applicant number
Submit all application materials through the PHORCAS system by January 2
Early Commitment Option for current PGY1 residents may be available
