Curriculum & Schedule
Instruction in our program is based on a core curriculum and multi-disciplinary approach that encompasses every aspect of clinical gastroenterology and hepatology. Fellows will have hands-on training at the main campus hospital in Ann Arbor, as well as our satellite hospitals, which include Chelsea Hospital and Trinity Health Livingston. New for the 2025-2026 academic year, began rotating at Trinity Health Livonia.
Outpatient experiences will include a weekly Gastroenterology continuity clinic occurring throughout all 3 years, as well as attendance at specialty clinics in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Hepatology at Huron Gastro. Fellows will have the opportunity to see patients at the nearby Hope Clinic which provides free medical care to those in need. They will have dedicated time to read capsule endoscopies along with 1-on-1 manometry teaching sessions with Dr. McGorisk. Second-year fellows will spend 1 month at the University of Michigan working on the inpatient hepatology consult service, including liver transplant consultations. Third-year fellows may opt to use elective time to rotate through the outpatient hepatology clinics at the University of Michigan.
There will be robust training in endoscopic procedures throughout all 3 years of training with dedicated endoscopy blocks and ample opportunities for endoscopy when rotating at the satellite hospitals. Senior fellows will have some exposure to advanced procedures including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound. Our educational curriculum includes weekly didactic lectures, multi-disciplinary IBD conferences, clinical practice meetings, lectures with GI pathologists and radiologists, and M&M conference. Opportunities to arrange elective rotations are available to third-year fellows. In addition to clinical training, fellows will develop an understanding and appreciation of clinical outcomes and research during the fellowship. All fellows will have a mentor and complete a research project during their 3 years of fellowship. Fellows are expected to publish their research in a peer-reviewed journal and/or present their research at a national meeting.
